Is it just me or is the media in Malaysia using the word ambience a lot lately?

It initially sounded like such an intelligent BIG word to me, but now people use it so often with bad English that it's starting to sound ridicules to me.

Kitten War: The Underdogs

Exams has always been closely associated with = procrastination. Also, give and take, work and reward. eg: 2 hour of studying = 4 hours of play (or more).

Kitten war has been my latest procrastination stunt. Also cause it’s slightly safer as it’s less addictive than say, playing a RPG game or catching all 3 CSI New York, Miami and Las Vegas. Oh wait, I catch of 3 CSI religiously too!

Darn. That explains a lot….

I actually prefer dogs rather than cats and those kittens aren’t even mine. But kitten war is so addictive because I want ‘my’ kittens to be the cutest kittens.

It’s also a nice change to see cats and kittens in their best, rather than just road kill and/or begging for food. Meow.

The long and suspenseful wait for the release of two short films by Superratty Films has finally come to an end.

Tomorrow, The Door and Irregular Instances of Madness will be shown to all who’s interested in the Journalism Lab, 1pm-2pm, Monash Malaysia.

I was fortunate enough to get a short interview with the director, TMY over MSN. Here’s an exclusive look into the inner thoughts of TMY

szen: what is your motivation to make these 2 short films from which i've heard, contain rather violent scenes
TMY : haha. there's nothing really violent about these two films. It didn't turn out that way anyway. i'm mostly motivated by just having fun instead of doing assignments all the time.

szen: do you think they reflect the lives of monash students in malaysia?
TMY : hahahahahaahaha. i don't know if it reflects the lives of monash students. but hey for some of my friends, there are a number of inside jokes that wouldn't sound like jokes to other people. so in that sense of course it reflects a certain aspect of people's lives*

szen: do you have future aspirations of these two short films? ie a wider audience across the country (or internationally)
TMY :hahahaha. both are "international"!!! my local friends living overseas received copies of it. haha. but if you're talking about official screenings, nah. i didn't do these shows for that purpose. it's pure fun

szen:do you think you'll face any censorship?
TMY : its a simple show, but if u throw this out to the malaysian censorship board. its going to be "too much sexual connotation" and "too much violence"... even though there hardly is any blood, and hardly any form of sex. it'll get banned outright, even though there's nothing bannable about it. hahahaha.

Out of curiosity, I watched an episode of Simple Life 3. Paris Hilton makes me feel fat.

Which brings to my attention girly dolls these days.

Doesn’t Bratz dolls look like a girl suffering from anorexia? Big head and tiny underdeveloped body looks like symptoms of anorexia to me.

Spring water from France

Tonight while brushing my teeth, I decided to pick up my tube of toothpaste and read the text written on it. It said:

Darlie- Hydro Fresh Gel ~ Contains spring water from France!

Oh dear….

Such a waste it was to had to finally rinse away all that spring water from France with water that probably came from a reservoir in Malaysia where teenagers had swam in or one that has a dead body floating in it (no surprise since teenagers swim in it). Ok, I actually have no prove of either of those two statements, but those were urban legends told during ‘ghost story’ sessions when I was growing up (I’m scarred for life).

But hey, at least I can sleep soundly knowing that I’m fighting tooth decay with spring water from France.

Money from the Hell Bank

For a long long time, it has been a great puzzle to me why we (my mom, and my large extended family) who, being a typical Malaysian Chinese family (which I presume we are), burn paper Money from the Hell Bank to send to our ancestors every Ching Ming.

While I am skeptical of this tradition, and have not participated in this annual ritual for many years already, I have always wondered why is the money issued from the Hell Bank.

Now this is a real treat for those not clued in (like myself). Randall from the BigWhiteGuy.com reveals the mystery behind Hell Money (link).

Fancy a Big White Guy enlightening some of us practitioners of this tradition.

Seal hunting in Canada

Nasty nasty sealers are out clubbing baby seals to death.

According to HSUS, "Sealing is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's East Coast". The seals are clubbed to death or shot, to add to that 95% of seals killed are below 3 months old.

This is what IFAW reported

Here’s what one such international team of five independent veterinarians found:
* 79% of the sealers did not check to see if an animal was dead before skinning it.
* In 40% of the kills a sealer had to strike the seal a second time, presumably because it was still conscious after the first blow or shot.
* 42% of killed seals examined were found to have minimal or no fractures, suggesting a high probability that these seals were conscious when skinned. (Source)

BBC News announced the beginning of possibly one of the biggest seal hunting season on 30th March 2005.

Take action by helping IFAW stop seal hunting here.

Mushroom Farm

Last weekend’s trip to Genting Highlands (Pahang, Malaysia) with my family ended with a trip to the mushroom farm.

I was expecting it to be a tourist attraction with an aesthetically pleasing set up. It was however more or less a shack with a Chinese restaurant selling a lot of (surprise surprise) mushroom dishes.

Nevertheless, it was quite exciting as it was my first time visiting a mushroom farm.

I have no idea what sort of mushroom this is; preserved or some sort of test tube mushroom

I wish I could figure out the history behind that farm placed almost next door to the infamous Genting theme park and casino. Unfortunately almost everything was written in Chinese which I can’t read.

The Mushroom Expert.com site has a lot of interesting facts about mushrooms. The digital photography part is a personal favorite.
